Dock decking replacement

If the frame and floats are sound, new decking can make an old dock feel new and get rid of splinters, soft spots and loose boards.

Decking takes the most direct beating on a dock: full summer sun, wet feet, coolers dragged across it and seasons of freeze and thaw. When boards start cupping, splitting or going soft, replacing the surface is often the most cost-effective way to keep a dock in service, as long as what's underneath is in good shape.

Which decking material should I pick?

MaterialStrengthsTrade-offs
Treated woodLowest upfront cost; easy to cut and repairNeeds sealing; can splinter, warp and rot over time
CompositeResists rot and splinters; consistent lookHeavier; some boards get hot in direct sun
AluminumLight, strong and long-lasting; drains wellHigher cost; texture and color affect how hot it gets
Grated or light-pass panelsLet light through to the water belowDifferent feel underfoot; not every frame suits them

What gets checked before re-decking?

  • The frame, for corrosion, cracked welds or rotted stringers
  • The flotation, since heavier decking adds load
  • Fasteners, so new boards aren't screwed into failing joists
  • Edges, bumpers and cleats, which are often replaced at the same time

Does weight matter on a floating dock?

Yes. Switching from wood to a heavier composite changes how the dock sits in the water. If the floats are already tired, the dock may ride low after a re-deck. A builder should check freeboard and the condition of the flotation before recommending a material.

Is a permit needed for new decking?

Like-for-like resurfacing on a permitted dock is usually upkeep, but anything that changes the dock's size or layout is a change the Corps may need to review. When in doubt, ask the Table Rock Lake Project Office.

Pricing comes from the dock contractor once they've looked at your shoreline, water depth and permit situation. We don't publish or quote prices, and a number given over the phone before a site visit is only a rough starting point.

Common questions

Can I re-deck a dock without replacing the frame?

Usually, if the frame and floats are sound. A builder will check both before quoting new decking.

Which decking stays coolest in the sun?

It depends on the product and color. Ask for samples and look at them in direct afternoon sun before deciding.
